Asbestos Notification
Each school building in the Governor Wentworth Regional School District has complied with the federal Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA)[40 CFR 763.93(E)(10)] by completing the following requirements:
- Inspecting all facilities for both friable and non-friable asbestos-containing building materials. The initial inspection began in the fall of 1988, and was completed in the spring of 1989. Three-year re-inspections have been performed each year since 1991.
- Samples were taken during the inspections of all materials suspected of containing asbestos, and the samples were analyzed at an Environmental Protection Agency accredited laboratory.
- An Asbestos Management Plan was written based upon the inspection report and laboratory findings. The Plan outlines the Governor Wentworth Regional School District’s (GWRSD) intent in controlling and abating any asbestos containing building materials.
Some asbestos containing building materials were found in the Carpenter Elementary School, Kingswood Regional High School, Kingswood Regional Middle School, Lakes Region Technology Center, New Durham Elementary School, and the Ossipee Central School. The District’s Operations and Maintenance Plan, which is part of the Asbestos Management Plan, describes the location of these materials and specific steps for maintaining the existing material until their ultimate removal. As of September 2011 all asbestos containing material was removed from Kingswood Regional High School.
The inspection results and Management Plan are available for review in the Schools’ Administrative Offices and at the GWRSD SAU Office.
